Wavves, King of the BeachWavves has a new album entitled, King of the Beach. The new album includes Wavves frontman, Nathan Williams, and a new backing band, formally Jay Reatard’s ex-band. You can get King of the Beach on iTunes today, with the physical release on August 3. Meanwhile Stream the entire album for free now.

This new effort from Wavves definitely has a more polished sound, which Nathan has been gradually moving towards since Wavves inception. On one hand the clarity in music is welcomed, on the other… much of the fun, raw distortion and antics that drew me to his music has been sucked out, the bedroom being replaced by the studio… hopefully the soul of the music will not be replaced as well.

Marcel Dettmann is one of the supporting pillars of the Berghain sound: Powerful, sexy and knowledgeable in the right sense. One could also say he knows his edutainment. Since 1999 Marcel is and has been a steady fixture at both the old OstGut and the new Berghain. The classic sounds of Chicago and Detroit have had a huge influence on him, but Marcel also says that “the music and the sets have to work, should have a soul and be ignorant of boundaries. I re-invent my DJ philosophy for every new set, location and night. Generally, it is very important to me to play as varied as possible sets fusing classic tracks with the contemporary ones.” Besides his DJ activities, Marcel also works at Berlin’s highly influential record store Hardwax. The store’s excellent musical portfolio provides Dettmann with a constant inspiration for his upcoming projects. “Music always works in a certain context at a certain time, or it doesn’t. There still are a lot of interesting, very varied artists and labels releasing loads of good stuff, be it classic or experimental.”

Redshape, Red Pack

Redshape, Red Pack

Next month Redshape will release a new 2×12″ entitled Red Pack, featuring six new tracks from the techno producer. The first release since his acclaimed 2009 debut album, The Dance Paradox. Red Pack will be available on double-vinyl and digital, via Redshape’s own Present imprint. You can also stream samples of all six tracks indefinitely. This is an extremely solid release from Redshape, a bit more dynamic and less “one tracked” than Dance.

‘Solvent Red’ boast a nice acid bass line with a truly classic feel. ‘Mucky Bones’ teeters on the side of electro-house and mirrors production from the likes of Vitalic’s recent work. ‘Grind’ goes soulful with a sprinkle of tribal; falling straight from the Detroit techno tree of knowledge.  ‘Brick Brack’ is the dancy-est tune while ‘Drama’ streams bare bones minimal.

Red pack Tracklist:
a. Soylent Red
b1. Mucky Bones
b2. Grind
a. The Lesson
b1. Brick Brack
b2. Drama

The remaining six tracks from Peter Van Hoeson‘s debut album, Entropic City are available to stream on the album’s microsite or via Peter’s soundcloud. Don’t forget, you can currently download the Variable_Parts_EP for free.

5. “Terminal” (5.55) Peter comes proper with this track. A nice low, driving bass line guiding the kicks. A much deeper addition then the “Terminal – Markov Layout” we were introduced to on the Variable_Parts_EP. At 2.32 Peter automates a higher pitch on the kick only to drop it to a sub-pounding level; an interesting break that leads to an impressive remainder. This one keeps the woofers warm and the crowd beggin for more. Nice.

6. “Testing A Simulacrum” (4.39) reverts back to the albums easy, going feel. It seems quite out of place nestled between these heavy hitters and is much better suited on the B side of an Orb release.

7. “Strip It, Boost It” (5.58) sees a much lighter tone then the Dub version on the Variable_Parts_EP. Though more dynamic, the quirky sounds and chirps fail to break through.

8. “Quartz#1″ (5.56) is the danger. A funky groove incorporating live bass guitar slaps that’s so mean you can’t help but bob your head. Nuff said.

9. “Colony/Return Of The Object” (6.11) moves into the dub techno arena with an icing of metallic glitch. White noise melts through the crevasse of broken beats to create a sticky, gooey mess so tasty Oscar Mulero’s mouth is watering.

10. “Defense Against The Self” (5.28) starts out pretty basic and parallels for the remainder of the track. It’s spaciness adds great depth and usefulness but the peaks fails to climb out of the clouds.

As suspected, Van Hoesen picked up the pace and lowered the bass for the majority of these last 6 tracks. Peter has assembled an extremely solid techno album: showcasing a variety of styles with confidence, adding to an already respectable roster of tracks. A clear purchase for any teched.
