Bonobo, Eyesdown

Bonobo, Eyesdown

The new single release from Bonobo, “Eyesdown”, is out today on Ninja Tune. The track features vocalist Andreya Triana with Bonobo’s soothing jazzy production and groovy beats. The release includes the original, instrumental and three remixes. Floating Points remix adds a bit more danceability with snappy snares and loopy samples. Warrior 1 reflects the sign of the times with a tech-house meets dubstep addition. The Appleblim & Komonazmuk remix evens the entire release out by slowing it down a bit and caressing with soft, luscious pads. All in all a very well balanced, solid release for Bonobo: a perfect way to bring in the spring season singing.

Marcel Dettmann Remixed

Dettmann Remixed

Marcell Dettmann is rightfully following in the footsteps of his Ostgut Ton label mates and releasing a full length album. Preceding his self titled debut is Dettmann Remixed. Four tracks are handed to Norman Nodge and Wincent Kunth for remix treatments. Norman Nodge takes ‘Shift’ and ‘Unrest’, Wincent Kunth ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Wound Up’. Nodge keeps it straight forward with his remixes while Kunth pulls out a couple of impressively deep grooves.

UNKLEJames Lavelle has confirmed a new album release for UNKLE in 2010. It is planned for May and includes contributors: Pablo Clements of the Psychonauts and Mark Lanegan, former frontman of the Screaming Trees. The new UNKLE album is entitled Where Did the Night Fall and Lavelle has described it as “different from the last one and a bit more electronic”. UNKLE’s last studio album, End Titles . . . Stories For Film New UNKLE Album, prorated the more intimate, instrumental and ambient side of the group and as the title suggests is a collection of cinematic pieces “inspired by the moving image.” This was much the opposite, although production and vocal wise still heavily influenced, from the 2007 release War Stories New UNKLE Album which bore witness to the groups evolution from sample heavy hip hop to trancy electronic pop to rock influenced anthems. The genius of UNKLE is headed back full circle, 12 years after the breakthrough debut of Psyence Fiction New UNKLE Album.

massive attack helioland Massive Attack, Heligoland

Heligoland, the much, much anticipated, long overdue album from Massive Attack is available for pre-order in a number of formats (releases 2/8/2010). There is a new “LP’ format from iTunes that will include 6 bonus tracks and exclusive art – two of the tracks (unfortunately) are only available on iTunes (and they may just be worth it). This new version will also include an enhanced version of the standard artwork plus new works and photos not available anywhere else. As of now, you can only purchase the entire album not individual tracks. A special triple vinyl / cd format with additional art will also be available – no word yet on where it will be distributed through.

Heligoland is the fifth studio album from Massive Attack and the first studio album since 2003’s critically-acclaimed 100th Window Massive Attack, Heligoland, created solely by Robert Del Naja (3D) as the other founding members split after the 1998 album Mezzanine Massive Attack, Heligoland. Grand Marshall (Daddy G) returns on Heligoland as well as long time vocalist cohort Horace Andy. In typical Massive fashion, the new album features an all-star cast of guest vocals from Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorrillaz), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Martina Topley-Bird (Tricky), Guy Garvey (Elbow) and Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio). The band also collaborated with DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks as well as guitar from Portishead’s Adrian Utley. The cover, as in Splitting The Atom Massive Attack, Heligoland and various UNKLE albums, is original artwork from Del Naja.

jamesmurphy 110 Next LCD Soundsystem May Be The LastJames Murphy (LCD Soundsystem, DFA Records) has hinted in a recent article with NME that the next LCD Soundsystem album, tentatively due out April 2010, may be the last. He has remains rather coy regarding the issue, but it seems he’s in need of a change. Murphy will no doubt continue music under a new moniker or possible with a new band. Murphy has been quoted saying the follow up to the 2007 album Sound Of Silver Next LCD Soundsystem May Be The Last, is “definitely better than the other two.”

Has Murphy decided to make a career move similar to other music heavy weights such as Eminem, Garth Brooks, Jay Z, Ja Rule? Claiming a resignation from music only to return, after phenomenal ‘last’ album sales and maybe a “best of” series. Or is he headed down the path of Trent Reznor, vowing to stop touring and more than likely continue music but under a new name with no preconceptions? My best guess leans toward the latter. Either way, the yet to be titled new release from LCD Soundsystem is already making it’s way to the lists of ‘Albums to be Heard in 2010′ and if his claims are correct, it should be a great way to say farewell.
