For Fünf, a 2xCD compilation celebrating the 5th anniversary of Ostgut Ton, the label asked some core artists to contribute tracks specially made for the comp. The label is home to heavy weight artists Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann and Shed (amongst others). Ostgut Ton, managed by Nick Höppner and official label of Berlin’s Berghain and Panorama Bar, took the concept of melting the club and label a step further by asking British artist Emika to collect field recordings sourced from Berghain for artists to use on their exclusive tracks for the Fünf compilation. Tracks were created forging the club sourced field recordings from the previously mentioned artists as well as Tama Sumo, Marcel Fengler, Norman Nodge, Prosumer, Soundstream, Luke Slater and Dinky.

Fünf is due to release next week and you can stream three of the tracks from Shed, Fiedel (1/2 of MMM) and Len Faki via FACT.

Marcel Dettmann is one of the supporting pillars of the Berghain sound: Powerful, sexy and knowledgeable in the right sense. One could also say he knows his edutainment. Since 1999 Marcel is and has been a steady fixture at both the old OstGut and the new Berghain. The classic sounds of Chicago and Detroit have had a huge influence on him, but Marcel also says that “the music and the sets have to work, should have a soul and be ignorant of boundaries. I re-invent my DJ philosophy for every new set, location and night. Generally, it is very important to me to play as varied as possible sets fusing classic tracks with the contemporary ones.” Besides his DJ activities, Marcel also works at Berlin’s highly influential record store Hardwax. The store’s excellent musical portfolio provides Dettmann with a constant inspiration for his upcoming projects. “Music always works in a certain context at a certain time, or it doesn’t. There still are a lot of interesting, very varied artists and labels releasing loads of good stuff, be it classic or experimental.”

Dettmann Remixed

Marcell Dettmann is rightfully following in the footsteps of his Ostgut Ton label mates and releasing a full length album. Preceding his self titled debut is Dettmann Remixed. Four tracks are handed to Norman Nodge and Wincent Kunth for remix treatments. Norman Nodge takes ‘Shift’ and ‘Unrest’, Wincent Kunth ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Wound Up’. Nodge keeps it straight forward with his remixes while Kunth pulls out a couple of impressively deep grooves.
