28 May 10

Two stages dominate my Detroit electronic music palette for the first day of Movement, Saturday, May 29th 2010. The Vitamin Water Main Stage is a safe bet throughout the entire day and a great place to start; especially since Matthew Hawtin (12-2), brother of Richie Hawtin, has the only set starting right at noon. It should be an interesting 2 hour set for an artist mostly known for his minimalistic visual art and texturous ambient sets. The Movement Torino Stage is also well stacked and has some great talent and sounds.

Mark Ernestus

Mark Ernestus

The Rhythm & Sound (2-5) set directly following Matthew Hawtin should range from chilled out reggae grooves to deeper house and techno: Von Oswald and Ernestus’ Rhythm & Sound recordings are much more dub-influenced and less techno-orientated than the duo’s previous, and more legendary, dub-techno recordings as Basic Channel and Von Oswald’s solo work as Maurizio. Ah, great way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

Picking up the Scion (5-6:30) live set after that is a perfect transition. This duo, René Löwe from Potsdam and Peter Kuschnereit from Berlin, started this experimental platform nearly 15 years ago though without much released material. After solo projects Scion live performances have been reintroduced and promise to bring serious dub techno.

Next I could catch Woody Mcbride (6:30-8) or make the short trek over to the Movement Torino stage and catch the tail end of long time Detroit resident Kenneth Thomas‘ (5-6:30) set. Only on the assumption that his set will go more progressive to techno and not trancy. Remember Kenny it’s the D.

Martyn3 150x150 Movement 2010: Saturday Set Recommendations

Martyn

More than likely I’ll travel riverside to the Red Bull Academy Stage to catch Martyn (6-7:30) and get my dubstep fill for the weekend. DZ (4:30-6) , the previous set at this stage, pulls some good dubstep but I just don’t care for MCs over Drum & Bass and Dubstep sets these days. I may also stick around for the Exclusion (7:30-9) set, depending on where the crew is at. Typically half are the die hard drum & bass fans all closely nestled together, bumping shoulders and staking claim to their spot a top the spiraling concrete stoop adjacent the (one) stage dedicated to their chosen genre. The other half can move freely, stretching our legs and scenery while bouncing from stage to stage, experiencing the lush sounds from Detroit techno, deep house, minimal and just plain bangin techno.

Following Kenneth on the Torino stage is Kirk Degiorgio (7:30-9) who has some solid techno releases on Planet E and ART. My inclinations point towards a groovy tech house set.

Next is Marco Carola (9-11), one of the world’s premier techno DJs. With a vast array of production credits and a whole host of labels under his belt (Design, 1000, Zenit, Question, Do.Mi.No) Marco Carola has emerged in the last decade to be one of Italy’s most influential exponents of techno and electronic music.

Theo Parrish

Theo Parrish

I may get a sudden rush of Detroit soul and check out Theo Parrish (9-11) at the Made in Detroit Stage. Though it’s the underground stage, known for its horribly echoing sets with bass kicks ominously tapping your shoulder throughout this concrete cave. Plagued by incredibly high humidity created from a dense haze of human moisture that starts to pick up just as the night falls. Though Made in Detroit has worked with Paxahau to redesign the stage and improve sound quality for 2010. Well overdue.

The highlight of the evening takes us back to where we started at the Vitamin Water Main Stage. The return of Plastikman live (11-12). This set promises to bring back much of what made the infamous early Detroit Plastikman parties great with an integration of new technology, audio, visual and crowd participation via the Plastikman SYNC app.

Break downs of the Movement 2010 stages on Saturday:

Vitamin Water Main Stage: Big names and a nice mix of genres and performers. Lives sets and one not to miss: the return of Plastikman live in Detroit, we’ve been waiting a long time for this…

Beatport: Three years ago I could hardly leave this stage, then dominated by Minus label artists and zeitgeist minimal. Last year Ellen Allien poised her set as my favorite for the weekend. This year (for Saturday at least) it’s the techno-pop stage. Instead of pool side in Ibiza it’s riverside in Detroit.

Made in Detroit: Deep, House, Minimal and Detroit. Theo Parrish to close it out. Should be nice.

Red Bull Music Academy: As last year, Drum & Bass and MCs dominate this riverside stage. This year also sees the introduction of Dubstep to Movement.

Movement Torino: A solid groovy day here, seems like a hand picked sets from the Innovator Derrick May. Starts off progressive, moves into Tech House and Techno.

Movement 2010

Movement Electronic Music Festival 2010

The initial Movement (aka DEMF) 2010 lineup has been announced and it looks impressive. As it should, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival will be celebrating a decade in existence this Memorial Day weekend, May 29th-31st, 2010. Headlining the festival will be classic Detroit pioneer’s such as Kevin Saunderson‘s Inner City, the return of Richie Hawtin‘s Pastikman (not seen in Detroit since 1994) and Juan AtkinsModel 500.

Rightfully so the festival is staying true to the rich techno heritage of Detroit with homegrown artists like Robert Hood, Kenny Larkin, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, DJ Rolando and Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir.

2010 will also see plenty of international electronic stars as well: A-Trak, Chris Liebing, Claude VonStroke, DJ Sneak, Joel Mull, Martyn, Simian Mobile Disco, Kid Sister, Rex Sepulveda and more.

I’m glad to see the return of many more “live” acts; something we’ve seen in the past at the festival, but I think has been missing the last few years. The full list is below… and still more to come.

Check out this new remix of Hot Chip, One Life Stand from legendary Detroit techno producer Carl Craig. The track is off their upcoming album of the same name out 2/9/2010. This Carl Craig PCP Remix starts out pretty basic with a classic acid bass line then meanders into a nice trippy break and slowly builds with guitar stabs and snares. Only until the 5:53 mark of the 10 minute track do the vocals drop and only for about 2 minutes. DFA fans will rejoice in this track, mirroring some resemblance to the recent 45:33 The Remixes. movement torino 2009 overview Movement TorinoMovement Torino kicks off today (VENUE: Pala Olimpico Isozaki di Torino). Movement Torino is the European version of Movement in Detroit (the Detroit Electronic Music Festival aka DEMF), one of the largest, longstanding and most influential dance music festivals in the world. Movement, started on Memorial Day weekend back in 2000, then called the Detroit Electronic Music Festival or DEMF, a name still used by many. The event was free that first year in 2000; a weekend that can never be matched. It was the best weather I’ve ever witnessed in Detroit on Memorial Day. The music was hot and stayed true to tha D. The festival was pure and poetic: unpaved by company banner Ads, the scent of carny sweet and misfit freak-shows who dig out lonely Halloween costumes to give the Hart Plaza bums something to laugh at besides mental anguish. Back then it wasn’t a bottom line that drove the artists to the stage but the dark and gritty, once industrial giant city that demanded it. Whispering admiration echoed through the abandon streets until the oceans heard Detroit’s gift to the world load and clear. It was the largest free event in the world… and an important time in history for electronic music.

Although the music expanded the event grew worse. More commercialized and less organized. It had a few bad years, though still pulled impressive artists. Thankfully Paxahau took the event over and things have seemed to run smoothly ever since. They have since moved their expertise and success with Movement overseas. The first event of this kind was staged on December 15th, 2006 by Movement Europe srl together with Derrick May, Movement founder and world ambassador. The third edition of Movement – Torino’s Dance Music Event in 2008 attracted 13 thousand people and established itself as the World’s Best Halloween Indoor Music Event. Now being paired as Movement Torino and Movement Detroit – Paxahau have recently signed a strategic partnership aimed to strengthen the two events and the Movement name across language barriers and country borders.

wmc2010 logo Winter Music Conference 2010 DatesThe Winter Music Conference is now in it’s 25th year. This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated and publicized global gatherings for pioneering artists, innovators and professionals in the electronic and music industry as a whole. The event will still be in Miami Beach at the bold new Eden Roc Beach Resort & Spa, March 23-27, 2010.

This event has long been regarded as an essential proving ground for new releases, artists and technological advances. Not to mention “it’s the place to be” for artist networking and a hotspot for parties including top names from across the globe. To put this event into perspective, WMC 2009 attracted over 70,000 event attendees, 503 accredited journalists and 3,228 industry delegates from 62 countries who participated in 52 industry panels, seminars and workshops as well as 1,910 artists and DJs who performed at a total of 506 events presented at 127 venues across 6 days in Miami Beach and Miami.

Highlights of the WMC 2010 will include the IDMAs (International Dance Music Awards), also in its 25th consecutive year, where the music business converges to honor exceptional achievements of industry, artists and innovators in more than 50 categories. The IDMAs is one of the only longstanding industry events of its stature where the fans decide – generating over a million votes from music fans in 183 countries last year. The online ballot will be posted in November.

WMC will also present the 3rd edition of South Beach Sessions, a new perspective on the traditional WMC panel program. Founded on the principles that make music compelling – individual expression, empowerment, creative thinking and collaboration – the program’s mission is to create greater exposure for artists and ideas. Pioneers in music, art, fashion, technology, business, education and the environment participate in one of the most inspiring and epic programs of the week. SBS has featured some of the industry’s most pioneering champions of positive change from Richie Hawtin to Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am.

Even though a majority of DJ’s have gone digital these days, there has been a recent spike in vinyl sales and there will always be die-hard collectors. Honoring the 12″,  WMC 2010 will also host the 4th edition of the Record Collector’s Show – an international hub for buyers, sellers and traders of rare and collectible vinyl, tapes, and music memorabilia which assembles the best record dealers and features some of the rarest music in the world.

Your WMC badge will also include entry to the 12th Annual Ultra Music Festival, the largest event of its kind in the US.

Currently the WMC industry badge is being offered at a promotional Early Registration rate of $235 until November 11th, which includes access to all official WMC events across the conference dates. Marketing opportunities are currently discounted by 40% through December 18, 2009.

29 Dec 08

beatport hear screenshot 200 Hear the New Beatport 4.0This coming January Beatport, a leader in electronic dance music downloads, will be unavailing a new and improved 4.o version. The update claims the improvements will engage all five of your senses. Most of it sounds like a gimmick, but the vision they have presented is intriguing…and the flashy promotional movie definitely gets my circuitry sparking and leaves a slight tingle in my bionic pinky-toe. The first sense unvailed revolves around an enhanced music player boasting new features that give you the ability to hear more music. The new player vows to play your tracks faster, but most importantly it keeps track of the music you’ve previewed in a playlist. You can also add a ton (up to 200) of tracks to the player for future listening (while in the same player session). A much, much needed improvement. There’s nothing worse than having to navigate back to that track you’re on the sidelines about for a second or third listening before a final decision. And don’t forget the dreaded accidental hit-the-browser-back-button-instead-of-the-internal-beatport-back-button; leaving you with nothing more than a landing page. Hopefully the new player will keep those mishaps to a minimum. There’s also a great  function to add an entire album to your playlist so you can quickly continue scouring other titles without missing a beat. You can also easily add and delete single or multiple tracks from the player and add them directly to your crate from the player with a few simple clicks. Gimmicks aside, the new player is a nice upgrade and it shows beatport has taken the time to listen to their users and put that research to good use. Check out the promo video and new player tutorial at thenewbeatport.com.
