28207 133273266690158 100000224565120 345031 1355470 n Part Two: Questions With Photographer Rachele Angelo

Kristina Mynatt

TF: When did you realize you loved photography?

RA: I think I was about six years old when I got bit by the photography bug.  I took my little poodle and put her in my Grandma’s rural mailbox and took a picture.  It was the center mailbox in a cluster of boxes.  Everyone made a big deal and said I was a good photographer. I liked being called a photographer.

TF: Who or what inspires your lens?

RA: I like taking photos of people as they move through the light and the shadows.  I like worn out things and  try to capture moments that escape time.  The ideal image for me is one in which there is no telling when it was taken.

TF: When did people become such a focal point of your work?

RA: When I moved to East Tennessee I started working at the Tomato Head ( a cool organic bistro). I was surrounded by visually interesting people all rocking their own unique style. My ideas started to crystallize  into candid portraits of my friends, and it just kind of went from there.  I like how portraits can preserve emotion, and I try to capture a moment in time that tells a story  the viewer can decipher.

This week we’ll be checking in on Rachele Angelo, a photographer on the rise in East TN. We asked her some questions about her work, lifestyle, and some of the things that inspire her. Each day we’ll post a new set of questions along with different photos we selected as our favorites. I have to admit that looking at her work all together, it was tough deciding which photos to choose for this piece. She has the ability to create something special and real with her camera. You feel as if you’re there in the moment, playing along with the cast of characters in the world she captures. I think the reason why her work leaves that impression is because it’s not forced. The images continue on after the picture is taken, and while looking at her photos, I was left thinking, what happens next? I find a photo to be remarkable if my imagination is left to do some exploring of its own. This week we’ll get to do just that.

On Friday, August 27th, Rachele will be presenting “Seasons at Home” as part of the Last Friday Artwalk in Downtown Maryville. You can find the gallery and Rachele’s work at 117 W. Harper Ave, Maryville TN.

Trent Reznor seems to be just as busy as ever after his planned “retirement” of Nine Inch Nails. First his new How To Destroy Angels project. Now he and long time collaborator Atticus Ross are nearing the end of scoring the new film from David Fincher, “The Social Network,” better known as the Facebook movie. This may seem strange at first, ‘self-admitted social reject music star established to anything but status-quo creates music for sign-of-the-times-movie about global social phenomena.’

Upon closer inspection it seems perfect: in recent years Reznor has fueled his success through online social networking, his creatively active twitter account (although not without brief lapses), created an entire social network based on NIN media and fans and probably opened himself and his music up to his fans more than any other artist in history; and in doing so changed the future for the music industry entirely.

“I”ve always loved David”s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.” Reznor states.

This isn’t Reznors first time working in film (Natural Born Killers, Lost Highway), though he has never scored a film before. Though his original music productions for the video game Doom (later versions of the game we produced by Tweaker, Nine Inch Nails ex band mate Chris Vrenna) give him plenty of experience in this arena.

Reznor and Ross are planning a stage two for the original film score “distilling the large amount of music we”ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two).” Reznor’s comment “Speaking of the film… it”s really fucking good. And dark!” sheds new light… or should I say darkness, on the film for me.

Not much any of us can do about the unfortunate realities in the Gulf. At this point I feel like swearing incessantly, and I am doing as much. The media is saying August at best the oil will be capped, I think thats bullshit. Lets look forward to decades of clean up, lives ruined, economies destroyed, wildlife and their environments victimized all in the name of “drill baby drill” or a better way to say it, this ‘American life” we live.

Soon we’ll be starting a podcast for the blog, which will be available on this site and itunes. Blake has done some extensive work to make this happen and I think the Twilight Frequencies community is stoked to hear some of the upcoming DJs we have lined up. This is the new cover art for Laces upcoming DJ mix. Laces is actually my band, and we’re delighted to have worked on this for the upcoming podcast. Below you will find a mix description, and artwork. Stay tuned for more music releases from the band, and a Laces music player with new tunes. We hope to have an album ready by July of this year, but if not, there will be plenty of tunes floating around this here atmosphere. Peace!

podcast artwork laces SPUR The Upcoming DJ Mix From Laces

“The multiplication of sounds through other sounds, equals the distance between the beginning and the end.” –Laces–

Volume One by Laces called “SPUR” features The Flaming Lips, Bob Dylan, Cassius, The Sea and Cake, Andrew Bird, and Neon Indian. This first go around also includes (among other things), The Velvet Underground and an original song by Laces called “Generations Games,” which is off the upcoming record.

In this Volume, Laces uses an experimental means to project the tone. It’s a mash up, coupling unlikely artists to form an adventure, glimmering with enough changes to keep the mood shifting.

Stay Tuned for Volume Two by Laces, and the upcoming record.

Volume One will be coming very soon!

Digidesign, makers Pro Tools, the industry standard in Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), as well as a slew of plug-ins, consoles and live performance rigs, is retiring… well, the name at least. The end of Digidesign and their flagship software Pro Tools is far from over, but parent company Avid, makers of video and film software, has decided to merge Pro Tools, as well as their other three major companies, M-Audio, Pinnacle and Sibelius, under the umbrella name Avid.

So what does the new company name mean for Digidesign? Not much really; Pro Tools will still be ProTools and staff and support will remain virtually unchanged. The only change customers will notice will be the Avid name and new logo on upcoming packaging and a new website that will be launching on April 12, 2010.

Avid promises the new site will include improved navigation, organization and overall  user experience. The new Avid.com will include all current Digidesign.com pages. At first, the new site will only include Digidesign US, but within a few months the international Digidesign websites will be included as well.

Who will see the biggest advantage? Customers who purchase products from multiple Avid companies; such as ProTools HD for DAW, M-Audio Axiom Pro 49 for a MIDI controller and Sibelius for scoring music. Digidesign.com will be the first company website to integrate into Avid.com, but M-Audio.com, Sibelius.com and Pinnaclesys.com will soon follow suite. This complete transition will begin providing multi product line customers benefits like a simplified product registration, single login ID, and a one-stop source for all product information, support, downloads and news.

The biggest advantage most likely will come by the way of new products and current product integration – like the recent additions Pro Tools M-Powered, Video Satellite between Media Composer and Pro Tools, and Sibelius integration into Pro Tools. Think of Adobe after their acquisition Macromedia – each of the company’s related software now integrate seamlessly, allowing users to flip back and forth, starting projects in one program and polishing in another, using each programs unique benefits to your advantage. Don’t rule out the possibility of suite packages or integrated plug-in packages.

Movement 2010

Movement Electronic Music Festival 2010

The initial Movement (aka DEMF) 2010 lineup has been announced and it looks impressive. As it should, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival will be celebrating a decade in existence this Memorial Day weekend, May 29th-31st, 2010. Headlining the festival will be classic Detroit pioneer’s such as Kevin Saunderson‘s Inner City, the return of Richie Hawtin‘s Pastikman (not seen in Detroit since 1994) and Juan AtkinsModel 500.

Rightfully so the festival is staying true to the rich techno heritage of Detroit with homegrown artists like Robert Hood, Kenny Larkin, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, DJ Rolando and Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir.

2010 will also see plenty of international electronic stars as well: A-Trak, Chris Liebing, Claude VonStroke, DJ Sneak, Joel Mull, Martyn, Simian Mobile Disco, Kid Sister, Rex Sepulveda and more.

I’m glad to see the return of many more “live” acts; something we’ve seen in the past at the festival, but I think has been missing the last few years. The full list is below… and still more to come.
