Adam Stolz has been doing his thing for over a decade. And his new live mix from the Electronic Music Festival in Kona, Hawaii doesn’t disappoint. After listing to it twice this morning, its literally one of those “every track is dope” mixes. A constant hook, with continual hard not to dance to bass lines. I’ve know Adam for almost as long as he’s been at this, and like his new live Mix, he always brings the hot shit.

Adam is inches away from releasing more new tracks, and celebrating the opening of a brand new label called AUTEM in collaboration with a variety of super talents from around the world. Cheers!

” New Chicago based label, Autem Audio, is the brainchild collaboration of five friends: GVK, Sarp Yilmaz, DJ Da, Adam Stolz and Hearthug. All of them internationally acknowledged artists in their own right they have each enjoyed great success on different labels, now they join forces to establish a new fresh platform to release their own music with soul and passion. The concepts behind Autem are to develop each artists individuality and help push them creatively to new levels while still keeping the sound dance friendly with an underground spirit. Marcel Dettmann, Techno Music Live Streaming DJ Set

Marcel Dettmann, a techno music premier dj and producer, took some time off his busy schedule, which includes a residency at club Berghain in Berlin, to perform a live dj set for the team at Beatport. The set was recorded live and streamed to their Ustream channel. Beatport described Dettmann “kicked off his set with nearly 45 minutes of dark ambient and experimental music. Diving into grainy dub techno, Berlin machine minimalism and pure Detroit deepness” Marcel concurred “The first hour of the mix was more of a background-music track selection, like I’m listening to when I’m working. The second part of the set was more of the stuff I usually play in the club.”

Highlights from last night were Monolake, such an inspired artist, literally grinning as he performed. It wasn’t hard to tell he loves what he does. Plus the visual performer was genius, I would have been smiling indeed. After Monolake, we caught the end of Rich, he was playing some amazing house music. From the festival we bounced to the CLR party to see Marcel Dettmann, RadioSlave, Speedy J, and Chris Liebing. Two floors of sound, three floors of fun.

The Tourist Trap, Sandwell Disctrict and Co. Night in Berlin

The only thing the Movement 2011 schedule or afterparty lineup is missing is a few appearances from the Sandwell District crew. If only this was an event happening in Detroit instead of Berlin I would have my wish (I would actually wish it to be on Sunday the 29th instead of Saturday the 28th as to not disrupt my already secured Saturday Movement afterparty plans.

For this intimate clubnight in Berlin Scorn will play a live set, Function will DJ a solo set and also join Regis for a Sandwell District set. Sandra Electronics will also be making an appearance which may or may not be a solo set from Regis (as it was originally a solo project for he) or he could be paired with a recent Sandra Electronics collaborator, Silent Servent (It Slipped Her Mind’ 10).

Possibly to give you an idea of what you may hear Sandwell District/Downwards have been kind enough to offer a Sandra Electronics, Live in Santa Barbara 2009 free download. A 3:37 sample where the artist(s) for the track are aptly named KARL AND THE CURBCRAWLERS.

Detroit Record Store Record Time Closes After 27 Years

After 27 years in business, Record Time, one of Detroit’s most well-loved record shops, will close for good next month.

“The writing has been on the wall for a while,” owner and founder Mike Himes said on Tuesday. “We were sinking fast, I knew it was time put the white flag up and call it a day.”

The shop has long been a centerpiece of Detroit’s music scene. It opened its doors in 1983, and has sold CDs and vinyl from a variety of locations since then, settling into its current Roseville spot in 1996. Over the years, it became a Detroit landmark for traveling musicians, from DJs in town for Movement (or DEMF), to celebrities like Dave Grohl and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. It was a hub for local musicians too: according to Himes, an adolescent Eminem used to stalk the aisles, taunting customers with his freestyle raps (some years he later, drew more than 700 people to the shop for an in-store performance).

But the thing that gave Record Time its global reputation was electronic music, which Himes kept cordoned off in the now legendary “dance room.” He first heard techno in the early ’90s, but didn’t realize how much of it was being made in his neighborhood. He contacted a few labels to find out where he could get more, and soon artists were bringing their records to the shop personally. Before long the dance room was like a club house for Detroit’s house and techno community, not least in the staff itself; Himes counts Mike Huckaby, Rick Wilhite, Magda, Claude Young, Rick Wade and Dan Bell among his former employees (“I’m probably forgetting some”).

“The best years were probably 1990 to 2000,” he says. “That’s when everything was happening. The dance room was so huge and influential, we had Record Time distribution going, selling Detroit electronic music universally, throughout the world, it was just crazy. Such a special time because we had a relationship with the people producing that music, and putting it out. It was fun, the golden years in my eyes, just being part of that.”

Himes admits Record Time has unusually high overhead costs—it occupies an 8,500 square foot space—but he still blames the store’s downturn mostly on digital music. Over the past few years, sales got so low that the dance room had to close, and soon after the the shop stopped selling new music altogether. “We just can’t turn people onto new music like we used to.” Though he thinks Record Time might have survived in a smaller space, he doesn’t see himself setting up a new location. “Maybe I’ll miss it, maybe I won’t. Right now it’s just not in the works.”

Record Time will remain open until (around) March 10th, and at the moment all of its stock is 75% off.

“It’s tough to let go,” says Himes. “Record Time was such a huge part of my life, and a lot of other people’s lives… We provide a service that will be missed.”

Downwards boss Regis takes the label back to it’s punishing roots with this new release from Ugandan Methods aka Regis and Ancient Methods. “Mat Oput 1/2″ is exactly what you would expect from Regis and Ancient Methods… menacing Industrial-Tech; quite a change from the last few releases on Downwards which tested the waters into indie-experimental-punk sounds. All great music that shows just how dynamic and refreshing a classic techno label can be.
