twilight_frequencies Podcast 007 comes in the form of a live set from Kero (DjKero.com). With over 13 releases on some of electronic music’s most celebrated and innovative labels such as Bpitch, Ghostly International, Shitkatapult, Downwards and his own critically acclaimed Detroit Underground Records, Kero (nee Sohail Azad), has established a reputation for his unrepentantly brash, yet cultivated compositions and unforgettable live performances. Most recently, his live performances have been alongside notables such as Speedy J, Ken Ishii and Funkstorung. Kero has also established himself as a leader within a growing pack of electronic music producers successfully infiltrating contemporary art circles world wide.

His innovative approach to music, graphic design and video production feeds on the detritus of popular electronic culture, creating a montage of fleeting musical and visual experiences that are paradoxically critical and enamored with contemporary culture.

Drawing on his experiences as a dual citizen of both Canada and the United States, Kero conducts visual and aural investigations that are concerned with ideas of the diametric and intermediary. Subsequently, the ephemeral nature of electronic culture, the “rave” experience and aesthetics offers a microcosm to explore similar elements in popular culture. The result is music that blurs genres from hip-hop to the most rarified of techno experiments, video art which stirs faint recollections of print and televised media, and a design language that has ingrained itself upon the most celebrated electro-cultural market in the world.

Adam Stolz is an active Dj in the city which he currently resides, Chicago, IL. He has upcoming releases on both Prosthetic Pressings (Chicago/DC) and Black Nation (Kalamazoo/Munich/Miami). Adam has some history with the main contributors of Twilight Frequencies. We all matured (I use that loosely) together during the ‘golden age’ of the electronic music party scene. We were strategically scattered between two major birth places of electronic music, Detroit and Chicago… spending many a long nights and early mornings capturing every last bit of sound and inspiration we could physically handle. We moved on to promoting and Djing events to indulge our love for music and soon began investing time into music production as well. We all grew independently from there, each taking a different path yet still bound by our affection for music and the emotions it provokes. We’ve all remained friends and it has been a joy to experience Adam’s growth as an amazing Dj and artist. I see great things on the horizon.

An event not to miss: Saturday August 21st, Adam Stolz will be opening for Alex Bau at The Smartbar in Chicago. Presented by Prosthetic Pressings.

“Lately, as I’ve reflected on the past, I’ve begun to see things in so many cycles. Friends from the past have come back into focus in my life and I see how well and how great everyone is doing. It’s inspiring to feed off all my friends, especially when everyone is positive and supporting the next man’s venture. Plus it also helps that every single one of my friends is a fucking music snob, and will call out a whack beat faster than you can say “Shoes in the Dryer”. We have all contributed to each others musical tastes, it’s been an awesome ride and it still continues to be.

Speaking of friends I want to give a enormous shout out and THANK YOU to Twilight Frequencies. You guys are awesome. Thank you for letting me be a part of this. We all go way back and I have seen you guys develop pretty heavily as artists and professionals (and vice versa), but no more moving Cerwin Vega bins around long concrete floors or going to jail for noise violations while your boys still look over your place with 100 slightly tilted people. Ah Good Times, but, we did it because we loved the music. Just the same as we do today!

Whether growing up in Detroit or Chicago you don’t have to drive far to see a corn field, it’s funny to think that as soon as you leave the city….BAM! It’s sometimes never ending, I mean shit, have you driven through Iowa. Jesus! Sorry Iowa, it is seriously nothing personal. I love ya, I really do, I have some friends from Iowa, so we’re cool. Anyway sorry.. corn… like I said. It feeds us, keeps us warm, gives us energy…and it’s even used to convey messages. One could say, that the Rural/Urban (lets call it ‘Ruralban’) societies based around these Midwest cities plays an integral part in the development of (the soul of) music since the beginning of the 20th century. It’s that soul you feel in a great house track. You can’t explain it. You can only feel it. And that is the best part. I love music that comes from the ground up! As it’s trying to move you.

So, by this point, you should be laughing. Seriously, that’s the idea. Why do something fun, that I love, and not have a sense of humor about it? It’s an escape. But!!!! not posing ‘Sven Vath’ style on a magazine cover painted up like KISS. We don’t necessarily need to have that much fun.

Cornbredbeats is a funny name and sounds weird saying it, but it has YET to NOT resonate with any one of my friends who hear about it. Come on, it’s pretty hilarious to think about the relationship of root house/techno culture so close to this boring, flat, cold, and yet somehow amazingly fertile soil. So yes, to some funny degree: corn bred beats.

And with that… volume one.

Marcel Dettmann, Red Bull Music Academy Radio Mix

Marcel Dettmann is one of the supporting pillars of the Berghain sound: Powerful, sexy and knowledgeable in the right sense. One could also say he knows his edutainment. Since 1999 Marcel is and has been a steady fixture at both the old OstGut and the new Berghain. The classic sounds of Chicago and Detroit have had a huge influence on him, but Marcel also says that “the music and the sets have to work, should have a soul and be ignorant of boundaries. I re-invent my DJ philosophy for every new set, location and night. Generally, it is very important to me to play as varied as possible sets fusing classic tracks with the contemporary ones.” Besides his DJ activities, Marcel also works at Berlin’s highly influential record store Hardwax. The store’s excellent musical portfolio provides Dettmann with a constant inspiration for his upcoming projects. “Music always works in a certain context at a certain time, or it doesn’t. There still are a lot of interesting, very varied artists and labels releasing loads of good stuff, be it classic or experimental.”

Project 313: twilight_frequencies Podcast 004

Project 313 is an emerging duo from Detroit. The effort is a collaboration of Detroit based DJ’s and Producers Chad Parraghi and Nick Bien. The combination of years of experience and a distinct musical taste has led them to forge a unique sound that fuses hard techno with IDM stylings. During a live Project 313 performance expect to hear heavy bass lines, irregular time signatures, assaulting synths and percussion sequences with real-time re-edits and effects processing geared towards dance floor mayhem.

The duo has been puttin’ in work on numerous live performances while producing new material for upcoming releases on D-Records and their own new imprint Blank Code, the collaboration of Project 313 and long time friend Corbin Davis. The three have been working closely with an international network of well established artists, as well as Detroit natives like Kero from Detroit Underground, on the creation of the new label.

Regis: Free Music Friday

Movement 2010: Saturday Set Recommendations

Two stages dominate my Detroit electronic music palette for the first day of Movement, Saturday, May 29th 2010. The Vitamin Water Main Stage is a safe bet throughout the entire day and a great place to start; especially since Matthew Hawtin (12-2), brother of Richie Hawtin, has the only set starting right at noon. It should be an interesting 2 hour set for an artist mostly known for his minimalistic visual art and texturous ambient sets. The Movement Torino Stage is also well stacked and has some great talent and sounds.

Mark Ernestus

The Rhythm & Sound (2-5) set directly following Matthew Hawtin should range from chilled out reggae grooves to deeper house and techno: Von Oswald and Ernestus’ Rhythm & Sound recordings are much more dub-influenced and less techno-orientated than the duo’s previous, and more legendary, dub-techno recordings as Basic Channel and Von Oswald’s solo work as Maurizio. Ah, great way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

Picking up the Scion (5-6:30) live set after that is a perfect transition. This duo, René Löwe from Potsdam and Peter Kuschnereit from Berlin, started this experimental platform nearly 15 years ago though without much released material. After solo projects Scion live performances have been reintroduced and promise to bring serious dub techno.

Next I could catch Woody Mcbride (6:30-8) or make the short trek over to the Movement Torino stage and catch the tail end of long time Detroit resident Kenneth Thomas‘ (5-6:30) set. Only on the assumption that his set will go more progressive to techno and not trancy. Remember Kenny it’s the D.

Martyn

More than likely I’ll travel riverside to the Red Bull Academy Stage to catch Martyn (6-7:30) and get my dubstep fill for the weekend. DZ (4:30-6) , the previous set at this stage, pulls some good dubstep but I just don’t care for MCs over Drum & Bass and Dubstep sets these days. I may also stick around for the Exclusion (7:30-9) set, depending on where the crew is at. Typically half are the die hard drum & bass fans all closely nestled together, bumping shoulders and staking claim to their spot a top the spiraling concrete stoop adjacent the (one) stage dedicated to their chosen genre. The other half can move freely, stretching our legs and scenery while bouncing from stage to stage, experiencing the lush sounds from Detroit techno, deep house, minimal and just plain bangin techno.

Following Kenneth on the Torino stage is Kirk Degiorgio (7:30-9) who has some solid techno releases on Planet E and ART. My inclinations point towards a groovy tech house set.

Next is Marco Carola (9-11), one of the world’s premier techno DJs. With a vast array of production credits and a whole host of labels under his belt (Design, 1000, Zenit, Question, Do.Mi.No) Marco Carola has emerged in the last decade to be one of Italy’s most influential exponents of techno and electronic music.

Theo Parrish

I may get a sudden rush of Detroit soul and check out Theo Parrish (9-11) at the Made in Detroit Stage. Though it’s the underground stage, known for its horribly echoing sets with bass kicks ominously tapping your shoulder throughout this concrete cave. Plagued by incredibly high humidity created from a dense haze of human moisture that starts to pick up just as the night falls. Though Made in Detroit has worked with Paxahau to redesign the stage and improve sound quality for 2010. Well overdue.

The highlight of the evening takes us back to where we started at the Vitamin Water Main Stage. The return of Plastikman live (11-12). This set promises to bring back much of what made the infamous early Detroit Plastikman parties great with an integration of new technology, audio, visual and crowd participation via the Plastikman SYNC app.

Break downs of the Movement 2010 stages on Saturday:

Vitamin Water Main Stage: Big names and a nice mix of genres and performers. Lives sets and one not to miss: the return of Plastikman live in Detroit, we’ve been waiting a long time for this…

Beatport: Three years ago I could hardly leave this stage, then dominated by Minus label artists and zeitgeist minimal. Last year Ellen Allien poised her set as my favorite for the weekend. This year (for Saturday at least) it’s the techno-pop stage. Instead of pool side in Ibiza it’s riverside in Detroit.

Made in Detroit: Deep, House, Minimal and Detroit. Theo Parrish to close it out. Should be nice.

Red Bull Music Academy: As last year, Drum & Bass and MCs dominate this riverside stage. This year also sees the introduction of Dubstep to Movement.

Movement Torino: A solid groovy day here, seems like a hand picked sets from the Innovator Derrick May. Starts off progressive, moves into Tech House and Techno.
